The Inipi ceremony is part of the North American Indian tradition as still lives under the North American Indians. In earlier times, this ceremony was known in other cultures but gradually disappeared.
The inipi or sweat lodge ceremony cleans three layers of the human existence:
-emotional / physical body
-the mental body
-the spiritual body
The ceremony provides an opportunity to pray to the creator, Wakan Tanka or Great Mistery, with the four elements - earth, water, air and fire - that are brought together in the lodge.
The forces of the four winds, the heavens and the earth are involved in the ceremony, each with its own meaning. These forces are collected in the seventh direction: the heart of man, Love, Unity in all life.
The fire represents the male. The lodge the female. The lodge is like a womb from which new life is born when the hot rocks are doused with water. The lodge is covered with several layers of blankets so that the heat of the stones and the steam from the water continues to circulate through every cell of the body.
The ceremony generally has four rounds of prayer where water is poured over the stones and traditional songs sung. Between the rounds the door of the lodge is opened while the people remain inside the lodge.
It is tradition to keep men and women separated in the lodge, but it is ok to combine the two in on lodge (on special occasions).
Origin of the Inipi.
Ni is the life of man. Ni is also the breath, which gives man his strength.
The i-ni-ti, or cleaning lodge, is made of willow twigs (approx. 3ft high) covered with (woolen)blankets. In the middle of the lodge is a pit excavated in the earth. Hot stones, Inyan, are placed into the lodge by the fire keeper(s) and put into the pit by the leader of the ceremony. While people are inside the lodge, the door is closed and water is poured over the hot stones. The i-ni-pi, the cleaning or purification ceremony begins.
The inipi is used for thousands of years by the native inhabitants of North America for healing, spiritual growth and purification. The warmth of the sun and the water on earth form the clouds and rain to feed everything. During the inipi the heat of the stones and water are brought together to feed the people. The inipi gives a direct and personal contact with the Earth, the Sun, and Wakan Tanka, the Great Mystery. The ceremony reconnects with the elements from which life is built up and offers the opportunity to look back in life and respond to yourself and your reality.
After the inipi ceremony you're like a newborn person.

Welcome To Oyate Canada
Mitakuye Oyasin. This is a Lakota saying that literally translated means "to all my relations" or "we are all related." To say "mitakuye oyasin" is to acknowledge, almost like a prayer, everyone and everything on Earth.
